Finally city’s longest overbridge connecting Gujarat college to Swami Vivekanand bridge was thrown open for public on Thursday evening.
At a hurriedly organized function Mayor Minaxi Patel in the presence of few councilors and officers inaugurated the bridge.
The overbridge was completed sometime back but its opening was mired in a political controversy. The Mayor had directly invited veteran BJP leader L K Advani to inaugurate the bridge but without the consent of Gandhinagar bosses. Advani refused to accept the invitation saying that it should come with the protocol of state government. The invite was never sent.
In the meantime Mayor tried to call Chief Minister Narendra Modi but he also refused. This issue had become an embarrassment for the ruling BJP in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation as the overbridge was ready to use. Infact 10 days back the opposition Congress had forcibly inaugurated the bridge but the administration closed it by putting barricades.
It is said that finally Municipal Commissioner G.Mohapatra intervened and Mayor received a diktat from Gandhinagar to open it. And in less than two hours time the bridge was cleaned and a function was held.
Though the bridge is yet to be named and Mayor is expecting that CM would come for naming ceremony. The bridge has been constructed at the cost of Rs.69.55 crore. Initial estimate was of Rs.59.55 crore and there has been a delay of more than eight months in the project.
