Railways has decided to increase passenger fare and freight tariff by about 2 per cent from next week to offset the financial burden arising out of increased fuel cost.
There will be no increase in either Second Class Ordinary (Suburban) or Second Class MST fares; Fares for Second Class Ordinary (Non-Suburban) would go up by a maximum of Rs 5/- in select distance slabs, while in the other distance slabs there would be no change in existing fares. In all other classes, the revised fares would be only about 2% higher than the existing fare.
Railways is expected to mop up about Rs 1250 crore from the hike in the last six months of the current fiscal. Freight has been increased by 1.7 percent. This will bring additional revenue of Rs 450 crore to railways.
The decision on the fresh round of hike has been taken under the system of fuel adjustment component (FAC) about which an announcement was made in the 2013-14 rail budget.
The revised passenger fare will be effective from the midnight of 6THOctober and 7th October 2013 (i.e 0000 hours of 7th October 2013). The revised freight tariff will be effective from the midnight of 9th October and 10th October 2013 (i.e. 0000 hours of 10th October 2013)
