The Gujarat High Court today granted three months bail to former BJP MLA Maya Kodnani, convicted in Naroda massacre, on health grounds.
She has been awarded imprisonment for 28 years and has been in jail since August last year.
She had sought six months bail. Her advocate submitted before the court that she was suffering from tuberculosis of intestines and had heart disease and depression. But the Special Investigation Team(SIT) probing the case opposed the bail plea. It said that the treatment could be made available in the jail itself.
However a division bench of Justice K S Jhaveri and K J Thaker granted interim bail for three months. The court asked Kodnani to furnish details to the SIT for her travel outside for treatment.
A special SIT court had awarded imprisonment to Kodnani, Babu Bajrangi and 29 others for Naroda Patiya massacre in which 97 people were killed during the post Godhra riots in February 2002. The SIT termed Kodnani as the kingpin of the incident. She was MLA from Naorda at that time.
Later Chief Minister Narendra Modi inducted her in cabinet as Minister of state for women and child development. She had to resign after she was arrested in the case.
