Selection of candidates for Surat West Assembly bye election has made it clear that both BJP and Congress want to play on OBC card.
Ruling BJP which had won the seat by a margin of 70,000 plus votes has fielded its city president Purnesh Modi, a member of Modh Vanik community while Congress has D L Patel as its candidate. Patel is from the Koli Patel community.
The constituency has Koli Patel, Modh Vanik and Jains as the three majority communities.
Selection of Modi shows that despite its hold in the Surat city, BJP does not want to take any chance in view of Chief Minister Narendra Modi being Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP. The party wants to have its best. He is a councilor also.
If we look from the vote politics angle, Congress candidate D L Patel, a retired Sales Tax Officer is contesting election for the first time. He is from Olpad which has considerable population of Koli Patels living in Surat west. Patel is quite familiar face in his community. He is a Swaminarayan follower and the area has the biggest Swaminarayan temple.
This time Jains wanted Nirav Shah to be BJP candidate and they are said to have brought lots of pressure on BJP high command. Cong expects share of Jain votes because of Nirav Shah factor.
Nov 16 is the last date for filing nomination and voting will be on December 4. The bye election is held because of death of BJP MLA Kishore Vankavala who had won by more than 70,000 votes.
