In first of its kind in the country, BRTS Ahmedabad will have bicycle feeder service on a pilot basis.
The main aim is to reduce traffic and consequently pollution. Initially 1,000 bicycles would be available on rent at nine different stations in the BRTS corridor under the project “MYBYK”.
According to the proposal commuters can get off at any BRTS stand and rent a bicycle to go to their place of work or study. They will also have a facility to return the bicycle at any BRTS station, Standing committee chairman Bhupendra Patel said.
Rs.200 monthly rent and Rs.3,000 deposit has been fixed for the bicycle. The standing committee has awarded contract for five years to a company for the project. The company plans to raise rent every year. But Patel said that he will have to take approval from the AMC to increase the rent.
Initially the service would be available at the following nine BRTS stations : Thakkarbapa Nagar, Soni ni chawl, CTM, Jasodanagar, Isanpur, Sola, Memnagar, Blind People’s Association and Shivranjani.
Very few people in the city might be knowing that there are bicycle routes besides in the BRTS corridors. But they have been encroached by vendors. Now the cycle will have to use mix traffic.
The AMC will charge a token rent of Re 0ne per sq.ft from the contractor. In the pilot project 3,000 sq.ft space has been allotted.
