A study conducted by the Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) has come out with startling facts about school going children of 10 to 15 year age group. About 20 percent are obese while 17 percent are underweight.
Doctors associated with the study focused on overweight problem. They are of the view that fast foods and sedentary life are the main causes of the growing problem of obesity. Eating while watching TV is the life style of 58 percent students and as a result they are not aware of the quantity of the food they are just swallowing.
Boys seem to be more prone to overweight. The study found that 65 percent of the overweight were boys while rest, 35 percent, were girls said AMA president Dr Pragnesh Vachharajani. 64% did not go for any kind of exercise, he said.
The sample size of the study was quite fair. Of the 20,000 students approached, 11447 took active part and responded to set of questions.The association also disbursed 20,000 books on healthy eating and ways and means to prevent child obesity. The association also plans to follow up with the surveyed schools to conduct meetings and guidance on the issue.
