Experienced and outstanding ultra trail runners from 11 countries will participate in the first ever ultra trail running event to be held in Gujarat. It has 101 km long 30 hour circuit in the inhospitable terrain which has made it a star attraction among runners.
Talking about the event, Gujarat Tourism Minister Saurabh Patel said that this being the first year of the event, entry has been restricted to 100. But, from the next year it will be a major event as we will have enough experience to conduct such event.
The Run is supervised by Gael Couturier, an experienced trail runner who has participated in several major ultra trail runs. The run has three categories-21 kms, 42 kms and 101 kms and maximum time for these events has been fixed for six hours, 12 hours and 30 hours.
The circuit is around the famous archaeological site-Dholavira in Kutch and the three day event will start on February14. Till the date 98 persons have registered their names. Of these eight are women, says Hiral Ravatia, director of Great Asian Outdoor one of the main promoters of the event.
Anil Nair, news editor of Outdoor Journal, who himself is also a good sportsperson, says six of the world top ultra trail runners will be participating in the event which makes it a spectacular footrace event.
Half of the track in all three categories is a kind of hilly path with undulating track while the rest has challenging landscape like wetlands. Team of experienced sportspersons has been going through the track to give final shape to the event and facility spots like rest place and emergency care, he said.
Hiral says that some such events have been held in India, but the level of participation in the Run the Rann makes it exceptional adding dimensions of major event.
Some of the celebrity participants include Krissy Moehl, who is 2 time UTMB winner, Nikki Kimball, a 3 time Western States 100 miles winner.
