It was a function to inaugurate renovated Sardar Patel National Memorial. But it became a kind of battle ground between Congress and BJP about the place of Sardar Patel in the power politics of India.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi did not miss the opportunity to express his new found love for Sardar Patel when he ended with a very edgy statement that if Sardar were the first Prime Minister, tasveer and takdeer of India would have been different.
Though the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had written speech, the focus was to clarify the relationship between the first Prime Minister Nehru and his Deputy Sardar Patel. It was amply clear from his speech he had anticipated that the issue of Sardar and Nehru would surface at the function.
To add masaala to the matter, Union Minister and President of the Memorial Society, Dinsha Patel, corrected a date Modi had quoted in his speech while telling the audience that it was Sardar who first brought the issue of reservation for women in Ahmedabad Municipality in 1919. Dinsha said that it was in 1926 and not 1919.
With an obvious target at Narendra Modi, Dinsha Patel said that Sardar Patel was a man of action and not rhetoric. He said that Sardar acted, he did not talk much.
Modi spoke first. He spoke about the greatness of Sardar Patel and his vision of reservation for women and Town Planning. He appealed to youth not to take up bam or bandook. He ended his speech saying that had Sardar been the first Prime Minister, tasveer and takdeer of India would have been different.
Dinsha Patel who spoke next corrected Narendra Modi and said that Sardar Patel brought the idea of reservation for women in 1926 and not 1919 as mentioned by Modi.
It was Prime Minister who spoke in the last. He ended with saying that Nehru and Sardar had very good relations. They had disagreement on issues, but issues having agreement were much more. He quoted Sardar saying that he was fortunate to give advice to Nehru and Nehru willingly accepted his advice.
Both of us have worked as friends and colleagues all through our life said Sardar as quoted by the Prime Minister.
Prime Minister inaugurated the renovated high tech Memorial.
