With rumours about attacks being planned on people from the Northeast spreading across the county, the Union government has finally woken up and taken some steps. Realising that the rumours are being spread through mass SMSes, the government has ordered a countrywide ban on bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days.
Users across the country will not be able to send more than 5 SMS/MMS per day for the next 15 days. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the Lok Sabha said it was the government’s duty to protect people of the Northeast and that it will discharge its duty to the best of its ability.
The Union home ministry called for a meeting of top officials after Singh’s remarks and directed the ministry of telecommunications to tell all service providers to classify more than five SMSes and MMSes as The Centre has also specified a limit of 20kb for MMSes. “We have banned bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days for now. The agencies are also monitoring social networking websites and the Internet to identify people who are spreading rumours,” said RK Singh, Union home secretary.
