Gujarat health department down with swine flu

Gujarat Global News Network, Gandhinagar Even as Chief Minister Narendra Modi resumed office a week after testing positive for swine flu the officers of state health department have caught the infection. State Health Secretary Ravi Saxena has been confirmed positive for the virus and four others were also declared positive.
Additional health director Paresh Dave has tested positive for swine flu while Dr. S J Gandhi Director Epidemic has been quarantined. Additional Health Secretary Mukesh Puri, Additional Secretary Meena Bhatt and joint secretary I A Vora and four others have proceeded on leave. They had attended a meeting with Saxena two days before.
Principal Secretary S K Nanda has been given charge of the health department. Nearly 8 to 10 officers who had come in contact with Saxena have been quarantined.
There is panic in the department and staff is reporting on duty wearing masks. The department has also issued advisory for its staff. People have been asked not to shake hands and instead greet others with Namaste. They have been asked to wash their hands with soap and water.
The staff has been asked to take medical advice and go for test if any symptoms of cough, cold or fever are seen.
Meanwhile cases of swine flu are on rise in the state. On Thursday four new cases tested positive. Of these two were from Ahmedabad and one each from Gandhinagar and Bhavnagar. With this the total number of cases in the state has reached 289 and the death toll 40.
State Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas admitted that few officers of the department had tested positive. He said that the swine flu virus was in air and all should take steps to prevent it. For news in Hindi see our Hindi daily Chaupal Chronicle
