Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad Congress Councilor from Jamalpur ward Imran Khedawala has moved the Gujarat High Court against civic administration’s failure to control stray dog menace in the city. In a public interest litigation he has alleged that the officials and the organizations misused the funds meant to provide medicine for rabies.Khedawala said that despite spending huge amount of Rs.1.55 crore for sterilization programmes of dogs there has been no relief. Instead the problem is increasing day by day and yearly more than 30,000 cases of dog bites were being reported. He said that during the last four years over 50,000 cases of dog bites were reported in LG hospital and over one lakh in V S hospital. Despite all this it was unfortunate that the civic body was taking this issue lightly. He said that many deaths had also occurred due to dog bites. The councilor also demanded compensation for those killed due to rabies and also for those who were bitten by stray dogs. He said that an NGO Animal Help Foundation had been given huge amount for sterlisation of dogs but nothing has happened. Despite several representations the AMC has not woken up to the problem. A division bench of Chief Justice M S Shah and Justice A S Dave instructed the municipal commissioner to prepare a plan to tackle with the increasing problem of dog menace. The court has also given liberty to Khedawala to move thecourt again if the AMC failed to follow the court’s instructions. For news in Hindi see our Hindi daily Chaupal Chronicle
