Gujarat Global News Network, Ahmedabad Gujarat’s oldest labour union Majoor Mahajan Sangh turned 93 on Friday. Founded by Mahatma Gandhi the sangh has more than two lakh members.It was established in 1917 when the textile mill workers demanded a 50 percent hike in wages. Ahmedabad which was known as Manchester had several mills and thousands of employees. Mill owners wanted to give 20 percent hike and labourers went on strike under Mahatma’s leadership who went on fasting. Ultimately after four days 35 percent hike was negotiated. Majoor Mahajan Sangh is based on socialist and communist ideologies and it observes December 4 as Labour Day instead of May 1.
