The country’s 12 Prime Minister, Shri IK Gujral passed away today in Gurgaon. He was 92 years old.
Gujral breathed his last at 3.27 pm in a private hospital after a multi-organ failure. He was admitted to the hospital on November 19 with a lung infection. He was on dialysis for over a year and suffered a serious chest infection some days ago.
He was born on December 4, 1919 in Jhelum town now in Pakistan. Educated at DAV College, Haily College of Commerce and Forman Christian College, Lahore (now in Pakistan), Gujral took active part in student politics and at the time of the partition, he migrated to India.
Gujral started his political career with the Congress. He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in April 1964. He was the Information and Broadcasting Minister when at the time of the Emergency.
Gujral then went to the Janta Dal in the 1980s. He was made the external affairs minister in the VP Singh-led National Front government in 1989. His second stint as the external affairs minister came in the United Front government under HD Deve Gowda, whom he later replaced as prime minister after the Congress withdrew support in the summer of 1997.
Mr Gujral was also known for his strategic vision of India's role in its neighbourhood. His vision, known as "Gujral doctrine", held that India should go the extra mile with its neighbours without expecting reciprocity, as long as they did not endanger India's security.
