Encouraged with increase in tourist flow, Oman tourism has organized a road show in India to attract more tourists. Wedding destination and MICE tourism are two main areas Oman tourism is trying to sell in India.
Oman received 2,99,022 Indian travellers in 2015, reflecting a 17 per cent increase from the year 2014. Oman expects the trend to continue even in 2016, ministry’s deputy director general International Tourism, Asma Al Hajry, said.
She said that Oman wanted to develop tourism in the country from family tourism point of view. She said that presently 11 cities of India have direct air connectivity with Oman and soon Ahmedabad and Kolkata will also be added.
“Our strategy has been to position Oman as a high quality destination attracting evolved travellers from India. It was never a mass destination or a backpackers destination,” said Lubaina Sheerazi, Indian respresentative of Oman’s tourism ministry.
She said that they see a huge potential in destination weddings and that around 10 destination weddings have been organised in Oman in the past two years.
Lubaina said they have seen travellers who have travelled a lot and want to explore new destinations across the world.
Oman’s National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) revealed that Oman received 299,022 Indian nationals last year, reflecting a 17 per cent growth in 2015 from 2014. The data also reflected a growth of 60 per cent in the number of Indians travelling to Oman in the last five years.
This year, we also identified Kolkata as a new market for Oman and will be conducting our first road show in the city. With this new addition, Oman has made its presence felt in eight Indian cities, with Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai being our main markets,” she said.
